new Blog site [Jun. 7th, 2008|12:59 pm]
Since I've realized that SO many people check my blog more often than my website, I have decided to revamp the Blog.. stream-line things a bit and make it more user-friendly.
Blog posts are now categorized and there is a search box, so it is much easier to find things and to view similar work at once.

So, update your bookmarks! My new blog site is : http://www.nategates.com/theblog/
Technically, it is the same blog.. just newer and shinier!

Derek - downtown St. John's [Jun. 3rd, 2008|11:11 pm]
Derek is a guy with a lot of important letters after his name.
If that weren't impressive enough, he is also one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.
It was great to spend the afternoon with you.. I hope you like these shots!

SWB Maine [May. 26th, 2008|12:10 am]
A couple of weeks ago I attended a 3 day workshop called Shoot with Beckstead.

David Beckstead has been named by American Photo magazine as one of the top 10 wedding photographers in the world, so it was an absolute honour to spend a few days working with him, learning from him, and having him critique my work.
The workshop was hosted by David Murray at his studio in Kennebunkport, Maine.

On the first day we spent about 8 hours shooting by the water. The scenery was so similar to the landscape here in Newfoundland, only it was quite warm and there was SUN!!!
The second day was spent working on our images, reviewing each others work and receiving one-on-one critique and feedback from David Beckstead. Unbelievable.
On the third day we were shooting again, this time in an old New England barn. There was very little light, and very little space, but we made it work, and the images are truly spectacular.

It was an intense few days, totally inspirational, and an invaluable learning experience.

Here are some of my favourite captures :

Here is a picture I stole from David Bracho
..me helping Kari in off of the rocks.. yes, I am quite the gentleman!

Kirby & Colin - Congratulations!! [May. 21st, 2008|05:05 pm]
Kirby and Colin are such a great couple.. totally laid back and so easy to work with.
On the day of their wedding, they opted to have photos taken together before the ceremony (an awesome idea, by the way!) We had lots of time to get some really beautiful shots out at Flatrock.. and thanks for humoring me with those moose antlers! I just couldn't pass it up! Best wedding picture ever.

Oliver - 7 months [May. 10th, 2008|05:45 pm]
Oliver is 7 months old. This has to be the cutest age.. and one of the easiest to photograph. He can sit and play on his own, but can't get away from me! He is the coolest little dude. I hope to see you guys again!

I was so excited to meet babies Seamus and Liam, and was very happy to photograph them at just 20 days old.
They were sleepy and cuddly and perfectly poseable.. It's just too bad that they weren't cute. ;)
Happy Mother's Day, Amy!

Char & Damien - Congratulations! [May. 6th, 2008|10:37 pm]
Char and Damien got married last week in Cuba!
We had arranged to do a cool wedding/bridal shoot once they got back to Newfoundland, and I had so much fun with them!
It was nice to be able to take our time and not be on a tight schedule, as I usually am on wedding days.
I am thrilled with the results of these pictures and I hope Char and Damien are just as excited!

Graduation [May. 5th, 2008|07:17 am]
Erin and her friends just graduated from Memorial University, and I had a really great time taking pictures of them as they celebrated together. We had a beautiful day to spend some time outdoors, so I took advantage of it and got some casual shots of the girls as well.
Congratulations on your graduation!!! I wish you all the best in your futures.

Dayna - It's a Boy!!! [May. 3rd, 2008|08:43 pm]
I photographed Chris and Dayna's wedding last summer, and was happy to shoot a maternity session with her just a little while ago.
I have been learning recently that SOOO many of my brides are now expecting, and I'm so thrilled to see you all again and to meet your little ones! It's all very exciting! I guess I should put out a warning that if you have your wedding booked with me, you will likely be preggers shortly after! :)

Dayna is a beautiful mom-to-be.. and I believe she is taking suggestions for baby boy names, so if you have any, send 'em here!

I recently took pictures of Heather, Chad and their dog Belle at Middle Cove beach.
They are such a cute couple and were very comfortable in front of the camera. Belle is pretty awesome as well.. she seemed to have lots of fun playing in the water. (I think I might want a puppy..) Here are some pictures from our day at the beach :)

David and Jessica - Prom [Apr. 23rd, 2008|06:22 pm]
Prom, Prom, and more Prom!

I was invited to take pictures of David and Jessica on the day of their Prom.
The weather wasn't very cooperative, so we didn't get outdoors like we'd hoped to, but I still think we got some pretty awesome images.
David could totally be a model. (I'm not kidding.. I might be calling you!) ;)

Shauna - Prom [Apr. 22nd, 2008|07:40 pm]
On Friday, I took pictures of Shauna at her family's home that overlooks the ocean. It was a fantastic day and I couldn't imagine a more spectacular setting for our shoot. As we were finishing up, a bunch of her friends arrived in a sea of coloured dresses and decked out suits. This was THE place to be on prom day!! Congratulations on your graduation, Shauna!!
